From 1993 to 2008, the famous German artist Anselm Kiefer lived and worked in Barjac, where during those years he transformed a former silk factory into La Ribaute, a 35-hectare studio. No place so small or there is a weekly market, especially in the summer season. Barjac (5 km) has a large and busy weekly market on Friday mornings. Uzes (40 Km) tops that on Saturday mornings but the agricultural market on Wednesday mornings is a bit less crowded and also very much worth a visit. In Les Vans (30 km), it is the hippies from the Cevennes who add a special ambiance to the market on Saturday mornings. Pont St Esprit (20 km) also holds its weekly market on Saturday mornings with a distinctive North African signature. And then, of course, there are numerous bric-a-brac markets and vides greniers throughout the summer. The semi-annual antiques and brocant market in Barjac during Easter and Assumption Day is one of the largest in France with 400 exhibitors.
