La Source is a large, comfortably furnished gîte for 6 people, part of the "Les Mirandes" estate in Montmoreau.
Montmoreau is a charming French village situated in the southern Charente, on the border with the Dordogne and not far from the Gironde. It lies at the heart of a triangle formed by Cognac, Bordeaux, and Périgeux, making it an excellent base for gourmets and wine lovers. Our beautiful manor house, "Les Mirandes," is located approximately 500 meters outside Montmoreau, a village where you can admire a 12th-century Romanesque church and an ancient castle, yet still enjoy all modern amenities. "Les Mirandes" lies on an ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and was once a place where pilgrims could stay overnight and enjoy a meal. As a silent witness to this history, the large wooden cross, symbolizing ultimate hospitality, still stands on our property.
'Les Mirandes' is located within walking distance, just outside the village, on a hilltop, offering stunning views of the valley. The nearly 7-hectare estate is dominated by an elegant, very cozy 19th-century manor house, where you can count on all the necessary comfort and hospitality. Charming gîtes have been furnished in the former inn complex. The property is surrounded by a landscaped garden, a vineyard, an orchard, and a patch of pristine forest.
"Les Mirandes" is therefore well-named (literally meaning: a place from which one can observe the surroundings). It offers a magnificent view of the valley and Montmoreau below.
The Charente is a region where you will find ample peace and tranquility. In short, an excellent place to explore the area for a longer stay or simply to relax and unwind. At 'Les Mirandes', four gîtes are available, where you can enjoy your holiday entirely according to your wishes, alone, with your partner, or with your family. The swimming pool is at your disposal, as is the pétanque court and a covered lounge area.
Each gîte features a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave, as well as a television and a washing machine. Wi-Fi is included as standard, as are tea towels, bed linen, and towels.

The Poitou-Charentes region on the west coast of France is blessed with countless treasures, including its weather. Its four departments (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne) form the sunniest region on the Atlantic coast. The exceptional number of sunshine hours is among the highest in France and rivals that of the Mediterranean hinterland.
The Charente department is named after the river of the same name, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Rochefort (Charente-Maritime). It is an area of meandering streams and expansive lakes with sandy beaches. Walks and bike rides lead you through a diverse landscape of forests, fields, and vineyards. The picturesque villages in this department largely date back to the Romanesque period.
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (the land of dawn on the Dronne River), for example, a stone's throw from Montmoreau, is one of "les plus beaux villages de France." A historic and artistic village, its sixth-century monolithic church, carved into the mountainside, is world-famous. In summer, you can book a unique concert in the underground church; you'll be amazed by the beautiful resonance of the sounds in this acoustic temple.
Angoulême is not only the capital of the Charente department, but also the "capital of comics," attracting more than 200,000 visitors annually to its prestigious comics festival (the "Festival international de la bande dessinée d'Angoulême"). Situated on a rocky plateau and completely surrounded by a mighty rampart, the city offers a beautiful variety of historic buildings, charming shopping streets, and picturesque restaurants.
Recommended day trips that you shouldn't miss include:
- fashionable Bordeaux (au Bord de l'Eau, on the banks of the Garonne), with the majestic Place de la Bourse, the starting point for a labyrinth of picturesque streets, with its charming facades, streets, and squares; the Cité du Vin, where an interactive tour guides you through the history and curiosities of the world of wine; the wonderful and creative Bassins de Lumière, etc.;
- Royan Atlantique, the region's seaside resort with a constant buzz, renowned for its beaches, family atmosphere, forest, and sunshine. There's also the famous evening market (every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday) on the Promenade Pierre Dugua de Mons, where artisans, designers, and producers showcase their handcrafted creations made of wood, glass, iron, shells, clothing, and jewelry. You can also sample local specialties such as Mouclade Charentaise, goat cheese, a glass of Pineau, etc.;
- the picturesque town of Brantôme, or the Venice of the Périgord, where a boat trip takes you past the limestone cliffs and the town's rich heritage, which can be combined with a visit to the troglodyte village of La Madeleine.
Gourmets are in heaven in the Charente. Foie gras, truffles, magret de canard, oysters, and a wide selection of exceptional cheeses are just a few of the delicacies this region has to offer. The region also produces a number of excellent wines, as well as the legendary Cognac and Pineau des Charentes. With the Dordogne and Gironde departments in our backyard, the world's most famous wine villages are nearby: Médoc, Graves, Pessac-Léognan, Pomerol, and St.-Emilion are just an hour's drive away.
For family-friendly provisions, everything is readily available in the village of Montmoreau, 1 km away, or a 1-minute drive. There's a fairly large supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, librarian, and more. There are weekly markets in the neighboring villages, and for those looking for something a little bigger, there are three shopping centers within a half-hour drive (Soyaux, La Couronne, Champniers). Whether you come for the Charente vineyards, the rich gastronomy, the charming villages and their markets, the antique shops and cozy sun-drenched terraces, the rich cultural and historical heritage, or simply for the peace, nature, and good weather, Poitou-Charentes is a special region in which to spend your holidays...
