Our peaceful, sunny village of Vacheresse is a strategic location for exploring the region.
The Abondance Valley is fortunately still a little-known spot. It lies between Lake Geneva and the Portes du Soleil ski area. It follows the course of the Dranse River, dotted with small, authentic villages.
Here, the mountain landscapes are pastoral. The numerous crosses, oratories, and chapels along the roads and trails leading up to the mountain pastures bear witness to this ancestral activity, which is still very much alive today. In summer, hikes pass through forests and flower-filled meadows, where cows graze, offering views of the blue of Lake Geneva or the Dents du Midi, as well as Mont Blanc and the multitude of peaks that are so numerous that it's hard to name them. In winter, winter sports dominate, and you can choose from family-friendly ski resorts like Bernex, Abondance, and La Chapelle d'Abondance, or explore the 600 km of slopes in the Portes du Soleil ski area from Châtel.
But if the beautiful scenery or skiing aren't enough for you, don't worry, it's impossible to get bored here.
The activities are numerous and vary throughout the year with the changing seasons and the crossing of borders: skiing or snowshoeing, cycling or mountain biking, whitewater sports, hiking, via ferrata, golf, paragliding, water sports, relaxing on the beaches of Lake Geneva, and thermal baths. And they can easily be done in a single day. In summer, for example, you can go hiking from the Bise site and get up close to the ibex, eat lunch at a restaurant tucked away in an alpine pasture, and go swimming in Lake Geneva in the afternoon. If the weather is gloomy, head to the Bains de Lavey. The Leman Mountains Explore website is a good source of information on activities and events in the region.
Our visitors also enjoy the Thonon and Montreux Christmas markets during the holiday season, as well as the "Fabulous Village of Flottins" in Evian. Châtel offers "Rock en Piste." Summertime is the time of year for music festivals and village festivals. Our mountain people are festive!
The gastronomy is rich and the restaurants are high-quality. You can, of course, enjoy a fondue, but the specialty of the Abondance Valley is Berthoud with Abondance cheese. On the shores of Lake Geneva, you'll find whitefish fillets. You can fill your water bottle with Evian water at the historic spring in the center of Evian or open a bottle of local white wine.
Cultural experiences are also diverse. Both Thonon and Evian have theaters, cinemas, and exhibition halls. The renowned Gianadda Foundation in Martigny is not far away.
